DAY 3
DAY 3 – DOKA COFFEE PLANTATION & LA PAZ WATERFALL
Despite wanting to sleep in on a Sunday morning, the group was excited to meet at the church one again early – 8am to be exact, to head out on another adventure.
Once gathered, we headed out on the bus toward the Doka Cafe Plantation. After an hour winding through the mountains taking in the breathtaking views of the scenery, we arrived at the plantation around 9am. We were greeted by a student playing the marimbas.
Our group, along with an American group from Chicago, started out with our guide, Reynaldo explaining and demonstrating exacting how coffee beans are grown and harvested.Â
We went to 7 stations where we learned how beans are grown, stored, dried and converted into coffee. Students were able to take turns raking the beans out in the sun while they were drying.Â
We learned that it takes 28 pounds of coffee beans eventually turn into 5 pounds once done, and coffee bean pickers only make $2 per basket of coffee berries that they pick.
Of course there was coffee tasting and coffee shopping in the souvenir store. The various blends of coffee were talked about and we were all given a chance to taste them all…
ON TO THE WATERFALL…
Â
LA PAZ WATERFALL
One of the most famous places in Costa Rica is the La Paz Waterfall. Upon arrival we were able to take part in a buffet filled with Costa Rican favorites – salad, rice, beans, chicken, pork, natural fruit juices – and some not-so Costa Rican food, but favorites of ours – pizza, french fries, hot dogs. After our meal we headed to see the sights. There were observation areas where we saw nature up close and personal. There were toucans, various birds, butterflies at various stages of life, cattle, frogs, snakes, and large felines like mountain lions and cheetahs.
Then it was ON TO THE WATERFALL.Â
We walked down what seemed like 1000 steps to see the waterfalls and the scenery.Â
But every step was worth it. It was breathtaking and quite memorable.
After a few hours, we hit the souvenir store and then on the bus to head home.Â
After an hour ride back to San Joaquin enjoying the twists and turns back down to the mountain, everyone was tired and upon arrival, headed to their individual homes to enjoy the rest of the day
SCHOOL TOMORROW! We cant wait to learn more Spanish!
