DAY 5 – CLASSES, COOKING, DANCING AND MASK PAINTING

Students were excited to get to school today to have class #2. After meeting again at the church and following the now known path to the school, we arrived at 8:00

Classes ran again until 10am when we had our break and we were back in classes again until 12:00 noon.

Today was a special day, as we were invited to the kitchen area where there were tables set up with vegetables, knives, cutting boards, bowls and food. We were all given hairnets and were invited to all share in making our lunch today.

We were given a lesson in food names in Spanish including pepino (cucumber), chile dulce (sweet pepper), cebolla (onion), zanahoria (carrot), lechuga (lettuce), culantro (cilantro), arroz (rice) and pollo (chicken).

We were divided into groups and some shredded the chicken, some cut lettuce and tomato, others sliced onions, shredded carrots and cut cucumbers. We were making Arroz Con Pollo (rice with chicken) and Ensalada (salad) along with Peach Iced tea.

Mikhail and Destiny ended up in the kitchen stirring the pot and combining the rice with the cooked vegetables. They were natural cooks! Others helped to clean the dished while we waited on the food to be completed. Once done, we were served and it was delicioso!

Afterwards, we were treated to dancing classes on the basketball court where everyone worked up a sweat to various types of dance moves.

Following that, and a brief rest, we gathered around tables with pain and masks for an explanation of the use of masks in the Costa Rican culture.

We were each given a blank wooden mask (shaped in the forms of either a cheetah or el diablo) and paints so that each person could paint their own masks.

There were many creative masterpieces at the end.

At the end we all marveled at each other’s creative handiwork and took a group photo.

MASK PAINTING

As the sun began to set, we headed back to our neighbourhood to each of our homes where our mamaticas were waiting with dinner.

We can’t wait for tomorrow’s adventure!
